What is Chimney Cake?

Chimney cake, also known as kürtőskalács or trdelník is a traditional bread-like pastry that originated in Hungary. Delicious freshly baked treat with crunchy outer layer and fluffy dough on the inside. ENJOY!

History

Chimney cake’s history can be traced back to the 16th century, during the time of the Ottoman Empire. The original inspiration for chimney cake is believed to have come from the Turkey. When the Ottoman Turks invaded Hungary, they brought with them their culinary traditions, including this unique pastry.

Over time, the kürtőskalács evolved and adapted to the Hungarian culture, becoming a beloved dessert in the country. The name “chimney cake” comes from the pastry’s distinct shape, resembling a chimney when it is cooked. Traditionally, chimney cakes were made by wrapping a sweet, yeasted dough around a wooden cylinder and baking it over an open fire. The dough is rolled in sugar and spices before being baked, giving it a caramelized, crispy exterior.

Originally, chimney cakes were enjoyed during special occasions and festivals, such as weddings and Christmas markets. However, their popularity grew, and they became a staple street food in Hungary, available year-round. As time went on, chimney cakes spread beyond Hungary’s borders and gained popularity in neighboring countries and eventually around the world. Today, they can be found in various countries, often with regional adaptations and variations in toppings and fillings.

Whether enjoyed plain or filled with Nutella, or other delicious fillings, chimney cakes continue to captivate taste buds and bring joy to dessert enthusiasts everywhere.
